Hi! My name is Avital Raff and I am working as an Organizing Intern with JCUA this summer. I am excited to be working with such a rich and energized organization that unites the Chicago Jewish community around social justice work.
I grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey until my family relocated to Evanston, Illinois in my sophomore year of high school. Currently, I am studying American Studies with a concentration in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Education at Barnard College in New York City. This past semester I became very involved in Columbia/ Barnard’s Hillel where I grew in my commitment to the Jewish community and social activism. This coming semester, I will be the president of Columbia/Barnard’s Jewish Activist Collective (JAC). JAC provides a meaningful space for me to explore and deepen my Jewish progressive values through Shabbat lunches, protests and service work. My favorite part about working in Jewish communities is the sense of common values, identity and a commitment to justice. Outside of my academic and activist involvement on campus, I love hosting vibrant Shabbat dinners and exploring New York’s diverse museums and restaurants.
I am excited to continue my Jewish activism throughout the summer in my position at JCUA through working with and expanding JCUA’s rich network of passionate Jewish activists. I look forward to getting to know the JCUA community and helping to grow JCUA’s meaningful work this summer.
