We must respond with solidarity and strategic action
Like many of you, I’ve been feeling the anger and anxiety of this moment. In a few short days, the new administration has issued dozens of Executive Orders and policy announcements that endanger our neighbors and undermine our democracy.
Following through on its vow to “make an example” of our city, the administration has threatened large-scale raids in Chicago, leaving many families terrified. We’ve also seen an aggressive anti-DEI agenda, pardons for the people who stormed the Capitol, denigration of trans people, reversals on police reform, and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. This captures only a fraction of the destructive policies introduced this week.
It’s easy to witness all of this and feel despair. Indeed, that’s the intention. As we anticipated, the administration is deploying a “flood the zone” strategy — relentless announcements, leaks, and rhetoric designed to sow fear, overwhelm the opposition, and demobilize us.
But we will not stand down. We must respond with solidarity, clarity, and strategic action, knowing that communal power is stronger than fear. While these attacks evoke some of the darkest chapters in our history, our legacy of resilience reminds us that we can — and will — overcome together.
Here in Chicago and across Illinois, JCUA members and staff are working closely with our partners to share information, coordinate actions, and prepare for both the short and long term. We’re proud to be part of our local tapestry of resistance, and we stand ready for whatever comes next.
We know we don’t have all the answers now. But we have each other. Together, rooted in our Jewish values, in lockstep with our partners, we will protect our neighbors, strengthen our multiracial democracy, and continue building a city, state, and country where everyone can flourish.
