Chicago Justice Series: MLK Dinner & Discussion on History of Segregation @ Silverstein Base Hillel
Jan 15 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Last year, in partnership with Mishkan, Silverstein Base Hillel and Repair the World, JCUA launched the Racial Justice Book & Film Series for Chicagoland folks interested in exploring issues of racial justice through literature and media. We are back for a second year in the series, now focusing on Chicago issues specifically. The 2018 Chicago Justice Book & Film Series will begin with a dinner and discussion on Chicago’s history of segregation on Martin Luther King Jr. Day – January 15, 2018.

In January 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family moved to North Lawndale to join the Chicago Freedom Movement’s fight against housing segregation and interrelated injustices in Chicago. Over fifty years later, let’s come together this MLK Day to share a meal and discuss the history of segregation in our city. This event will kick off the Chicago Justice Book and Film series, a five-part exploration of social justice in Chicago and the different policies, movements, and injustices that have led to the landscape today.

The cosponsors of this series, the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, Mishkan Chicago, Repair the World, and Silverstein Base Hillel, are excited to welcome Jack Macnamara, a visiting scholar at Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research and Learning, as our speaker for the evening. In the 1960’s, Macnamara was the chief organizer of the Contract Buyers League of Chicago, an organization of African-American homeowners who fought against unscrupulous real estate speculators.
