JCUA along with a coalition of Jewish and local immigrant justice organizations hold a special vigil to acknowledge the immense human tragedy currently unfolding at our southern border, through the lens and rituals of Tisha b’Av.
Tisha B’Av (the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av) is a Jewish fast day that honors and mourns the brokenness, loss, and shattered ideals in whose shadow we live every day, symbolized by the destruction of Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. The vigil will include selections from Eikha (the Biblical Book of Lamentations) alongside contemporary reflections, immigrant testimony, poetry, song and calls to action.
Join JCUA for a meeting with the Office of the Inspector General of Public Safety to learn about their recent report on Chicago’s Gang Database as well as how to utilize their Police Misconduct Portal. We will be joined by Inspector General Joe Ferguson. The meeting will be from 6:15 until 8:00 PM at the, Office of Inspector General, 740 N. Sedgwick, Suite 200.

JCUA’s North Suburban Organizing Team presents an evening with Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, staff from the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, and attorney and activist Lee Goodman. We will hear about economic and systemic problems in our own neighborhoods and the connection between what we see here, within our immigrant community, and what is going on across the state and the country. We will think together about how to take action to support immigrant communities and move towards economic justice for all in the Northern Suburbs. All are welcome and encouraged to attend for this important educational session and conversation. Light refreshments will be served.
