Join us for Acts of Change 2020 presented online on Monday, July 20 from 8:00-9:00 pm! Acts of Change is our flagship event in which our entire community comes together to reaffirm JCUA’s mission to transform the City of Chicago into a place that embodies the Jewish values of equity and justice.
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve re-imagined the Acts of Change in-person dinner as an immersive online experience. We’re excited to bring you an engaging program that includes special guests, music and more.
Since March JCUA has participated in Right to Recovery; a coalition of grassroots organizations, progressive elected officials, and communities in Chicago to demand our Mayor and our Governor make the humane choice to put our people over profit in response to the historic Novel Coronavirus outbreak.
In that time our Right to Recovery has contributed to multiple state and city-wide actions to get policy passed around our right to relief for housing, education, wellness, and racial equity. After the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department, Right to Recovery moved to adopt the Black Abolitionist Network’s list of demands. Join the Right to Recovery coalition on July 21st, at 6pm for an in-depth political and strategic discussion around how we can all be included in the fight to defund the police in Chicago.
This is an opportunity to better understand this current moment and learn more about the anti-racist, abolitionist struggle that millions of people have engaged in.

Illinois suffers from one of the most unfair taxing systems in the nation. It fails to tax people relative to their income and the impact is clear: a structural deficit, inadequate levels of core services to Illinois communities, and a bruised state economy. These problems have only grown clearer and become exacerbated in recent months with the onset of COVID-19 and the ongoing uprisings for racial justice in the state. Join Hakafa and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA) via Zoom to learn about the campaign to pass the Fair Tax in Illinois and how we can take action as a Jewish community to more equitably and justly fund our state.

Every year at Acts of Change, JCUA honors an individual with the Rabbi Robert J. Marx Social Justice Award for their commitment to the values JCUA’s founder Rabbi Marx lives and teaches. We honored Jeff Zaluda with this year’s award for his lifelong dedication to pursuing social justice and a more equitable Chicago. Jeff has been a leading voice in JCUA’s work for more than a decade, generously dedicating his time, passion, and resources to carrying forward our mission. He has helped us grow into an organization that is as focused and powerful as we’ve ever been.
The funds we raise for Acts of Change allows JCUA to activate the Jewish community of Chicago around racial and economic justice. You can still support Acts of Change and JCUA’s work to advance racial and economic justice in Chicago.

On November 3rd Illinois voters will go to the polls not only to elect a president, but to vote on an amendment to the state constitution. If approved, this amendment, known as the Fair Tax Amendment, will allow enactment of a graduated rate income tax in the state. Currently, Illinois has a flat rate income tax, which has created one of the most unfair taxing systems in the nation. It fails to tax people relative to their income and the impact is clear: a structural deficit, inadequate levels of core services to Illinois communities, and a bruised state economy. These problems have only been exacerbated in recent months with the onset of COVID-19 and the ongoing uprisings for racial justice in the state. Join us at this session to learn about the campaign to pass the Fair Tax Amendment and how we can take action as a Jewish community to more equitably and justly fund our state.
