Illinois suffers from one of the most unfair taxing systems in the nation. It fails to tax people relative to their income and the impact is clear: a structural deficit, inadequate levels of core services to Illinois communities, and a bruised state economy. These problems have only grown clearer and become exacerbated in recent months with the onset of COVID-19 and the ongoing uprisings for racial justice in the state. Join Hakafa and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA) via Zoom to learn about the campaign to pass the Fair Tax in Illinois and how we can take action as a Jewish community to more equitably and justly fund our state.

Every year at Acts of Change, JCUA honors an individual with the Rabbi Robert J. Marx Social Justice Award for their commitment to the values JCUA’s founder Rabbi Marx lives and teaches. We honored Jeff Zaluda with this year’s award for his lifelong dedication to pursuing social justice and a more equitable Chicago. Jeff has been a leading voice in JCUA’s work for more than a decade, generously dedicating his time, passion, and resources to carrying forward our mission. He has helped us grow into an organization that is as focused and powerful as we’ve ever been.
The funds we raise for Acts of Change allows JCUA to activate the Jewish community of Chicago around racial and economic justice. You can still support Acts of Change and JCUA’s work to advance racial and economic justice in Chicago.

On November 3rd Illinois voters will go to the polls not only to elect a president, but to vote on an amendment to the state constitution. If approved, this amendment, known as the Fair Tax Amendment, will allow enactment of a graduated rate income tax in the state. Currently, Illinois has a flat rate income tax, which has created one of the most unfair taxing systems in the nation. It fails to tax people relative to their income and the impact is clear: a structural deficit, inadequate levels of core services to Illinois communities, and a bruised state economy. These problems have only been exacerbated in recent months with the onset of COVID-19 and the ongoing uprisings for racial justice in the state. Join us at this session to learn about the campaign to pass the Fair Tax Amendment and how we can take action as a Jewish community to more equitably and justly fund our state.

Join JCUA, Repair the World, and OneTable for a Fair Tax Shabbat on Friday, August 21st. Shabbat is a way of dreaming up the world we want to see. Together, we’ll discuss the Fair Tax Amendment, talk about how this plays into the world we want to see for our future. This is an on-going, Chicago-wide conversation. We welcome folks who are just learning about this for the first time, to those who are already working on the ground on this initiative – and anyone in between! This will be a grounding evening for learning, conversation, and action. We’ll share in Shabbat ritual, discussion breakout rooms, as well as brainstorm how we can take part in the Fair Tax ballot initiative. In our small groups, guests can choose between three conversations: making art with visual representations of the Fair Tax, discuss relational building and how to talk about building a better future with their friends, family, and co-workers, and learning how to set up a presentation with other organizations or communities they’re involved in.
Note: Participants must be 21+ in age to attend.
Join Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA), Jane Addams Senior Caucus (JASC), Asian American Midwest Progressives (AAMP), and ONE Northside for a Fair Tax Day of Action on Sunday, August 23rd from 1:00-3:00pm!
There will be an online program on Zoom with speakers, music, and poetry, and then voter outreach through texting and calling – training provided. There is also an in-person component including chalking and flyering in our neighborhoods. RSVP here.
