We invite you to join JCUA for a a membership-wide conversation and teach-in about abolition on Monday, September 14, from 6:00-7:30 pm on Zoom. THIS EVENT IS FOR JCUA MEMBERS. Become a JCUA Member today here: https://jcua.org/get-involved/membership/
Over the past several months, discussions about abolition have come to the forefront among movements for social justice. We know that abolition is a loaded and often misunderstood concept. It involves two simultaneous processes: dismantling systems that perpetuate oppression, and just as importantly, envisioning new systems that sustain a just and equitable society. Abolition is not simply taking away one harmful institution and keeping the rest of the world the same; it’s about building a society in which everyone is protected, served and cared for.
On September 14, a team of staff and members will host a conversation and teach-in about abolition for the entire JCUA membership. We want to hear from you — hear where you are coming from, what excites you, what makes you scared or angry, and if and how you think JCUA might adopt an abolitionist framework for our work in the coming months and years.
We highly encourage everyone involved in and committed to JCUA‘s work to attend this conversation.
A Zoom link will be sent to everyone who RSVPs. As always, please be in touch with any questions prior to September 14.
Join us for The People’s Academy to stand against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “Citizen’s Academy”! On September 15th, ICE was planning to hold a “Citizen’s Academy” to teach civilians the tactics they employ to criminalize our communities. While ICE attempts to rationalize the terror they bring into our communities, we know the truth of the harms that ICE and all white supremacist institutions bring into our neighborhoods!
After a groundswell of protest led by our coalition, ICE decided to “postpone” its Citizens Academy until next year. But we are still gathering for a rally and teach-in to denounce the white supremacist institutions of ICE, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and police as they attack our communities, and to call on our elected officials to divest money away from ICE, CBP, and police, and towards resources that will reverse the chronic disinvestment these communities have faced for decades.

Illinois’ Fair Tax Amendment on November 3 ballot
Monday, September 21, 7-8PM
The Illinois Allow for Graduated Income Tax Amendment is on the November 3, 2020, ballot in Illinois.
A “yes” vote will support the repeal of the state’s current constitutional requirement that the state personal income tax be a flat rate and will allow Illinois to adopt a graduated income tax. The actual tax rates that will result in a graduated income tax are not part of this amendment and will be done in separate legislation. Illinois is one of only nine states that currently have a flat rate personal income tax.
Come hear Emma Kagan of JCUA (Jewish Council on Urban Affairs) who will explain how this amendment will work and educate yourself on this important ballot initiative. Please submit your questions to ChicagoSalon@ncjwcns.org or during the Salon.
Register at https://ncjwcns.org/events/92120salon/. You will receive the Zoom link a few days before the City Salon.
