If there is a single Jewish holiday that is awake up call, it is Rosh Hashanah. In the Torah it is Yom Teruah – a “day of shouting”. As we blow the shofar we express the emotions involved in standing in a spotlight of judgement on the cusp of a new year. We start and end with the triumphant Tekiah, calling us to attention and reminding us that we are strong and resilient – that freedom is possible and real. And in the middle, we sound the plaintive tones of Shevarim and Teruah, acknowledging that liberation can come only when we affirm and amplify the voices of those who face discrimination.
For those of you who have followed JCUA’s work over the past year, we remain true to our legacy of fighting social injustices in coaltion with our community partners. We translate Rosh Hashanah’s call into action every day as we advance issue campaigns, inspire young people, and invest in communities. Our growing membership is a testament to the Jewish community’s commitment to justice.
It has been a challenging year for justice – one which requires a collective commitment. But we have seen great victories in the fight to combat poverty, racism, and antisemitism, and this work is not possible without your support. Thank you.
Maybe you and your families be blessed with a Happy and Sweet New Year, and may we all be written and sealed in the Book of Life for another year.
