The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA) is requesting proposals for a consultant to create strategies and guidelines in order to: 1) align JCUA’s messaging across programs; and 2) develop a comprehensive branding and design kit for consistent communications internally and externally.

About JCUA

JCUA was established in 1964 with the mission of combating poverty, racism and antisemitism by working in partnership with diverse communities in Chicago. For more than five decades, JCUA has served as Chicago’s Jewish voice for social justice. JCUA uses a community organizing model to mobilize the Jewish community of Chicago to advance meaningful social change. As an organization, we strive to carry out our work in an anti-racist framework that moves racial equity to the forefront of our programs and initiatives.

Project Overview

JCUA is in a growth phase in which we are seeking to ensure that our messaging across programs is consistent and aligned with our mission. One of our core programs, the Community Ventures Program (CVP), a zero-interest loan fund that supports predevelopment activities to spur affordable housing and community economic development projects, has grown six-fold in size and impact. Our priority is to create consistent messaging across all of JCUA’s programs. We seek a Consultant to help us evaluate and hone our overall organizational messaging and to evaluate and advise us on the strategies we are using to communicate with diverse audiences, digitally and in print. For CVP in particular, we want to create marketing materials for diverse audiences that could be either donors to or users of the CVP loan fund.

JCUA communicates its brand and visual identity to its constituents through a variety of online platforms – the JCUA website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Medium, Constant Contact, and email. We have relied on a basic design kit that includes our logo, standard colors, and fonts, but we would like to build out the design kit to ensure we have a unified, appealing and appropriate visual identity and aesthetic. Under this RFP, the consultant will work with JCUA professional staff to: 1) improve consistent messaging and alignment on all of JCUA’s programs; 2) articulate JCUA’s visual identity and build out a comprehensive design kit; and 3) design templates and assets JCUA can use over to communicate over multiple messaging platforms.

Main Outcomes:

I. Strategy & Messaging
● Improve consistent messaging and alignment on all of JCUA’s programs, prioritizing our core programs: Organizing and Advocacy, Community Investment (CVP), Youth Leadership Development, and Membership Engagement.
● Develop recommendations to help guide our communications strategy for JCUA’s programs and activities.

II. Branding & Design
● Articulate JCUA’s visual identity in a comprehensive branding approach and course of action.
● Build a comprehensive design kit for JCUA’s core program areas, making sure the pieces fit into a unified whole.
● Design templates and assets that JCUA can use to communicate our core programs, through various messaging platforms (including digital communications and redesign of the website.).
● Assess and recommend improvements to JCUA’s website to enhance information, understanding and promotion of all JCUA programs.

III. Marketing Materials
● Creation of marketing materials specifically for CVP targeted to a variety of audiences.
● Creation of materials relating to all programs to assist with fundraising, engagement, and participation.
The consultant will work closely with several of JCUA’s professional staff members, with the key point of contact being the Manager of Communications and Engagement. For program content and messaging about the Community Ventures Program, the key point of contact will be the Community Development Program Manager.

● Experience working with small nonprofit organizations and developing effective organizational processes
● Experience with designing messaging for a variety of audiences
● Experience and understanding of some of these areas of nonprofit work: social justice, community organizing, community development, affordable housing, or membership-based organizations
● Experience leading branding and design development
● Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and other design software
● Strong written and communications skills.
● Previous demonstrated success in the work described above.

Compensation and Proposal Submission

In your proposal, describe your project-related experience, and provide examples and/or case studies of similar projects with previous clients. Please include a detailed description about how you or your team would be constructed — i.e., members of the team and team leader — together with descriptions of their relevant experience and accomplishments and examples of their work.

Proposals should include a cost breakdown including members of the consulting team will be responsible for specific outcomes. We have budgeted approximately $20K based on the scope of the proposal and we anticipate it taking no more than three to four months.
