Celebrating Our Wins in Springfield & What Comes Next

Yesterday, the members of JCUA’s Immigration Committee came together to take stock of our work and celebrate our wins this state legislative session! Thanks to the work of our coalition partners and members like you, we won:

  • The Safe Schools Act, which ensures that all children have the right to a K-12 public education in Illinois, regardless of citizenship status, and requires schools to create procedures to protect parents and students from ICE.
  • $40 million in funding for immigrant services — a $2 million increase from last year.
  • $355 million in new progressive revenue and closed corporate tax loopholes.

While we successfully protected healthcare coverage for immigrant seniors (ages 65+), we unfortunately were unable to stop healthcare cuts for immigrant adults (ages 42-64). We know the work continues, and we’ll keep fighting for restored access to healthcare for all. Additionally, while the Digital Ad Tax (our coalition’s biggest progressive revenue proposal) passed the Senate, the House removed it because they didn’t have enough votes to pass it this session.

This summer, JCUA Immigration Committee members are participating in a series of Know Your Rights Canvasses. These canvasses are critical for informing community members about their rights when encountering ICE.

If you’re ready to continue to work with us, join a Know Your Rights Canvass, and make sure you’re signed up for Immigration Committee emails to get updates on future meetings and work.
