CVP: Ujima Village Gets a 24/7 Home
JCUA’s Community Ventures Program (CVP) is partnering with Unity Parenting & Counseling to transform a vacant motel in Auburn Gresham into the new home of Ujima Village — the only fixed-site, non-congregate shelter for young adults experiencing homelessness on the South Side.
JCUA will provide a $200,000 interest-free CVP loan to cover critical pre-development costs, helping Unity secure city funding and finalize the purchase and rehab. Unity will convert the building’s 34 private rooms (each with its own bathroom) into a true sanctuary for 18- to 24-year-olds experiencing homelessness.
Since 2013, Ujima Village has operated as an overnight, “low-threshold” program — any young person in need can walk in and claim a bed, no referrals required. The move to a fully renovated, non-congregate, fixed-site facility will increase the capacity of Ujima Village and the well-being of its residents.
Research during COVID-19 showed that private-room shelters increase engagement with service providers and exits to stable housing, reduce interpersonal conflict and 911 calls, and improve feelings of safety, security, and optimism.
