What does it mean to be a member of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs?
It means you’re our lifeblood. JCUA is a member-driven organization that seeks to build the power of Chicago’s Jewish community to drive social change. Our nearly 2,000 members are advocates and coalition partners working to address the root causes of disparity and oppression in Chicago. We mobilize our members to take action in partnership with community organizations, in order to create a more just and equitable city.
If you choose to become a JCUA member, you can expect to:
Deeply engage with JCUA campaigns: JCUA members play an essential role in steering our campaign work. Members decide which campaigns we take on and can join one of our campaign committees (i.e. Immigration Justice or Police Accountability), which meet regularly to strategize about how to push campaigns forward. How do we create change? What tactics are best? All of these strategies emerge from member-led committee meetings.
Take action across the city: JCUA members are active participants in the political processes of social change: they meet with elected officials, canvass voters and residents, participate in press conferences, attend rallies and protests, and advocate for issues online and offline.
Develop leadership skills: JCUA strives to build the capacity of its members and create strong leaders in the Jewish community. Members can attend regular trainings throughout the year in which they learn essential skills related to community organizing. Members also work 1 on 1 with JCUA organizers to develop individual leadership plans, which identify intentional goals for individual growth and set out concrete plans to empower members to lead campaigns.
Stand in solidarity: All of JCUA’s organizing work is undertaken in coalition with Chicago’s diverse communities, and JCUA members have the opportunity to forge meaningful relationships in Chicago across racial, class and socio-economic lines.
Deepen connections with the Chicago Jewish community: JCUA’s membership base represents the beautiful diversity of our Jewish community. Our members are of different religious backgrounds, races, ethnicities and spiritual traditions. The core values of Judaism infuse our work, and members can expect to deepen their connection with the Jewish community and Jewish history, culture and practice.
Membership is only $18 per year, an amount we chose because it corresponds with the Hebrew word “chai,” meaning life. To learn more about JCUA’s membership program or set up a 1 on 1 conversation, please contact community organizers Anna Rubin (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Avra Shapiro (email@example.com).
